Four-day Workshop
The four-day workshop runs during the Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays.
The workshop takes place each morning, between 9.30am – 12.30pm over four consecutive days.
During the first three mornings, the children write their story, and on the fourth morning children illustrate their work.
Days 1-3
The mornings begin with a range of word-level and sentence-level activities designed to stir and inspire creativity. There is a strong focus on building vocabulary and increasing children's skill and confidence with handling language. The activities provide children with important building blocks for planning compelling plots, creating convincing characters and describing atmospheric settings.
Children are presented with a loose theme for their story and are encouraged to brainstorm ideas as a group before starting to develop their individual plan. Further tuition on setting, character and plot is given as necessary to assist children in writing up their own narrative.
Towards the end of the workshop, children learn how to be effective editors of their work in order to give their story the final polish.
Throughout the workshop, there is a keen emphasis on drawing inspiration from other authors. Over the three days, the children enjoy listening to extracts from a wide range of children’s literature which demonstrate different writing styles and techniques.
Day 4
During the final morning of the course, Lucy Panes shares some of her inspiration and techniques when illustrating a story. Using examples in her own work as a starting point, Lucy will demonstrate how to communicate character, emotion and tone in illustrations as well as looking at composition and colour. By the end of the session, the children will have produced at least a couple of illustrations for their story, using a range of materials.

The Finished Product
The stories written and illustrated by the children are compiled into a professionally printed book. Each child receives a copy of their book, included in the cost of the workshop. Additional copies are available to purchase separately.
